Marae Visit

On Wednesday 28th of August 2019 we went to a Marae. Once we got off the bus we got welcomed on to the Marae by the Kaikaranga. It was really fun, we got to listen to Maori myths. After that we got get something to eat. We got to eat biscuits, Milo and scones. Once we  finished we all went outside to have a run a round. After that we did a Haka with all the year 6's and year 5's. It was really fun!

Mixed Media-Visual Arts

In Term 2 our Visual Arts focused was on Mixed Media. We finally finished our pieces of art at the end of the term. We started off by creating two hands, most of us copied our own hands as templates. One hand represents our past and the other hand our future. We used lots of different materials and symbols to make our artwork as well as exploring a range of different techniques with watercolor paint. This is my art work.

Cultural Language week

Week 3 has been a very busy week with so many celebrations. Good Shepherd School celebrates our multicultural school with our Cook Island Language focus. We looked at the culture through our reading and made fun fact files. We were also lucky to have Alessandra and the cultural leaders teach us a Pure (prayer) to sing.

Room Six's Assembly

Last week Room 6 performed their assembly. Our main entertainment was a drama circle on occupations. We also displayed our mixed media we made in term 2. Some people also shared about what they put on their art and why. We all had so much fun preparing and presenting our assembly.

Hockey with Room 6

On Friday we had so much fun with Sport NZ as they came in to teach us hockey. We got to do warm up and drills with the hockey sticks and played against each other in teams. We are already looking forward to next Friday’s session. Here are a couple of pictures:

Room six's Prayers

On Monday the 5th of August Room 6 hosted whole school prayers. Our theme was The Gift of Faith. We did a song called ‘Open the Eyes of My Heart’ and Jiwoo, Zara and Maggie made hand actions for us. There were also people who did the prayers of the faithful. Overall prayers was a big success and everyone enjoyed it.

Mary Mackillops Feast Day

Another celebration for Good Shepherd School in Week 3 was the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. St Mary MacKillop a vital part of Good Shepherd School, this is because she was the founder of the Josephites aka the Brown Joes. The Brown Joes travelled all over Australia and New Zealand helping the poor and those in need. They built schools and that is how we are all students at Good Shepherd School. We celebrated the Feast day by going to a Mass for St Mary of the Cross and also having fun with our buddy class Room 4 as we worked on a St Mary MacKillop Art project.

Matariki

This week is Matariki. There are 7 stars in the sky. There names are Matariki, Waipuna-a-rangi, Ururangi, Tupu-a-rangi, Hiwa-i-te-rangi, Tupu-a-rangi, Waita, Waiti, and Pohutkawa. They are all sisters. I made an acrostic poem here are some photos.

  

Spreading the Good News

Today we did R.E on Spreading the Good News. It was about St Paul and where he traveled. I learnt that Paul made a lot of friends while on his Journey. Here is a picture of mine

The Water Cycle

How Does the water Cycle Work?

I am learning to inform my audience through an explanation.

Do you ever wonder when you are taking a drink of water, that you could be drinking water that a caveman may have been drinking or even a dinosaur? This is all because of an amazing cycle that earth has called the water cycle! A cycle is something that repeats over and over again and never ends. Do you know that there is only 3% of fresh water but 2% of that freshwater is locked away in ice caps, so that means the other 1% is the actual drinkable water. The other 97% of Earth's water is salt water in the ocean. There are three main stages of the water cycle, evaporation, condensation and precipitation but evaporation starts off the water cycle.

Evaporation is when a heat source warms up a liquid forcing the liquid to change into a gas. The water cycle an example of this, the water in an ocean, lake or river is heated by the sun it turns the water into water vapour. An example of this in our homes is when you are drying your clothes on your washing line, the damp water in your clothes does not all fall to the ground. The water from your clothes evaporates, the sun heats up the water and it changes into water vapour. Another example is with a kettle you can see the water as steam just before it changes to vapour before it disappears! If you cool the water vapour down it will condense back into a liquid. You may think that the water cycle is finished but its still has a more stages to go through.

Now I will be talking about condensation. When the water vapour gets high enough and the atmosphere starts to cool the water vapours down they begin to collect and start to form a cloud. The cloud goes higher in the sky and the water vapour in the clouds start to get heavy and eventually will fall from the clouds as either rain, snow, hail or sleet.

Precipitation is when the rain droplets from the clouds comes down in sleet, snow, hail Then when it starts to rain the water droplets return into the sea, lake or just on the ground. When any type of rain falls on the ground it is called groundwater, once that step is completed the three main stages evaporation, condensation and precipitation start all over again and it will never end.

So, as you heard the water cycle has three main stages evaporation, condensation and precipitation, they are all very important to the water cycle and if one step was removed we would not have water. So you are probably wondering “is that how water is recycled?” Yes that is how water is recycled, through all those complicated steps it final makes water.

GSS Book Week 2019

GSS Book Week 2019 

Room 6 was hungry for books during our book week. We had a whole week celebrating all things books. We had author visits from Stu Duval and James Russell. Stu presented workshops on storytelling, cartooning and writing. James shared his books and told us stories. We did lots of cool book week activities in class like making dust jacket covers, wanted posters, bookmarks and story cubes. Finally our favourite day arrived, Friday. We got to dress up as our favourite characters and partake in the literacy treasure hunt. Overall book week is a fantastic week every year. Room 6 LOVES BOOK WEEK!

Watercare

Water, water everywhere! On Friday of week 6, we were lucky to have Sally from Watercare come to teach us more about the water. We did a drama activity and experiments. Firstly we examined the process that water goes through to become drinkable water in our households. Our drama was based on the process that the water goes through to be cleaned. We were the water going through each stage. We had so much fun as we ventured around the school. Once we learnt how water is cleaned we then had to try and clean the dirty water ourselves. We had to create a filter system in partners. We had to do four different tests for our experiments. We experimented with a range of filters to try and test which filter system was the best.

Cross Country

Good Shepherd School had been busy training for cross country this term and finally the day arrived. In week 6 we all arrived at school in our running gear and had our house colors painted onto us. We were eager and ready to go and win house point. Overall the race was long and required a lot of stamina, but we were prepared. Here are some pictures from our races.

Samoan Language Week

This week was Samoan Language Week. In Room 6 we learnt a lot about Samoa and the Samoan culture. We watched Cultural Hub clips about the Samoan alphabet, animals and body parts. Did you know that the Samoan alphabet has only 17 letters?. Also during reading time we did a scavenger hunt on facts about Samoa, we then searched the classroom for clues to complete our Samoan puzzle. We had experts teaching us greetings and phrases, our experts were Matila, Remy and Rosa.

Eden Albert Football

On Tuesday we went Eden Albert football zones, we played 5 games of football it was really fun but we lost 3 games and tied two. I learnt lots of cool tricks as well, we had a football coach that we called croc man because he wore crocs all the time. He was really nice. My favorite part was when I nearly scored a goal from half way. Here are some pictures...

Science in a Van

Last week on Friday there were these people who came in to do science with us. They were really funny and once I got pick to go up on to stage with them. We were balancing stuff on our fingers but I dropped the mob that I was holding with both of my fingers and accidentally knocked somebody else's item. I had lots of fun. Here are some pictures

Original and Personal Sin

In today's lesson in Religious Education we learnt about original and personal sin. Original sin is where you are thinking of do something in your head that tempts us.  Personal sin is where you do that thing that you were thinking about, like say if there was a donut in someones bag and you were really hungry and you just take it and eat it that would be a personal sin but if you were just thinking about it, it would be a original sin. 

Martin Luther King, Jr poster

Last term we learnt about growth mindset. We made a factual piece about famous people with a growth mindset and how they never gave up. I picked Martin Luther King, Jr because he was one of the greatest leaders because he fought for equality. There were lots of interesting facts like his birth name which is actually Micheal.
